English classes in school

The short story is my favorite type of lit. I've always enjoyed my English classes in school. Except for the weird poems that sounded nothing like the official interpretation provided by the teacher. I remember the lily and the oak.

IT is not growing like a tree
In bulk, doth make Man better be;
Or standing long an oak, three hundred year,
To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sere:
A lily of a day
Is fairer far in May,
Although it fall and die that night—
It was the plant and flower of Light
In small proportions we just beauties see;
And in short measures life may perfect be.

Most of us students were not convinced by my teacher's interpretation that the beauty of the lily was better. we thought the oak was doing an unglamorous job as a tree very well!
